Toxic Shock Syndrome is a fatal condition caused by the release of toxins from an overgrowth of bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus. It is also known as Staph and is found in many women’s bodies. Menstruating women, who use tampons and pads are affected by toxic shock syndrome. This disease is prevalent in women under 19. As per statistics, about 30% of the women who have suffered from toxic shock syndrome will become a victim of it again. The body reacts with a sharp fall in the blood pressure, which lessens the oxygen supply to various organs. This can result in death, as well.
Nazish Mir, a 26-year-old resident of Delhi, suffered a similar loss when her friend passed away due to toxic shock syndrome. To tackle the issue, Nazish, along with her cousin Amir Ali and friend Monica Bindra came up with Laiqa.
Laiqa is a Delhi based start-up that manufactures sanitary pad from the highest quality of absorbent materials. These pads are feather soft, chlorine-free, and have minimal usage of plastic. Apart from this, these are eco-friendly as well. We will dig deep about every point further.
Laiqa pads are eco-friendly. If we assume the count of sanitary pads used per menstrual cycle as eight then approximately 12.3 billion disposable pads are generated every year. This is indeed a huge number to harm the environment. To address this issue, Laiqa packs its pads in a recyclable and reusable cardboard box. So no matter where one disposes the pads, it will not harm the environment and thus create sustainable surroundings.
Laiqa pads are free of chlorine and artificial fragrances. These pads use plastic on a minimal scale during its manufacturing. As per the start-up, it claims that only 7 per cent of the pad is made from plastic. Also, the plastic in the pad does not come in direct contact with the body.
We face intensive weather conditions in India. It gets super-hot in summers and super cold in winters. Laiqa pads are designed in such a manner that they are adaptable to the varying weather conditions. It has a breathable back sheet which helps women to stay sweat-free. This avoids the growth of bacteria. Also, it prevents leaks and keeps the lady free of rashes. Laiqa pads make sure to give women a feeling of security and comfort during her periods.
Laiqa offers ultra-thin days pads and cosy-fluff night pads. These products are available on their official website as well as in stores. You can also take a subscription of the Laiqa products for a period of 3, 6 or 12 months and get attractive offers on the same.
Comfort during periods is of utmost importance. In India, approximately 23 million girls drop out of school every year when they start menstruating. Many of them end up with some acute health problems. Apart from the provision of sanitary napkins, it is equally important to create awareness about menstrual hygiene management. A 2014 UNICEF report states that 79 per cent of girls and women are unaware of menstrual hygiene practices in Tamil Nadu, 66 per cent in Uttar Pradesh, 56 per cent in Rajasthan, and 51 per cent in West Bengal.
Our best wishes with the Laiqa team to help the women with sustainable leak-free, plastic-free pads. What are your views on Laiqa pads?
Losing a friend made Nazish came up with an innovative idea of redesigning the sanitary pads. She wants to save the lives of many women so that they don’t succumb to infection as her friend did. If you have an idea, which can help others do share with us on Bots ‘N Brains!
