Recently, the movie, Mission Mangal has been the talk of the town. The movie has managed to bring forth some facts which the people were unaware of. Our team also did some research and found that the hard-working and dedicated team had to work with many possibilities for the first time.
The mission, Mangalyaan or Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), observes and explores the Mars atmosphere. It studies its morphology and mineralogy. Courtsey this mission, India added a few first’s to its kitty. It became the first Asian country and the first nation to reach Mars orbit. Not to forget this was achieved in the first attempt!
This year on 24th September, MOM will complete five years of orbiting around Mars. If this is not enough it is going to stay there for another 4 years. As the Mangalyaan inches slowly each day, here are some fun facts about the same:
Weight Does Matter: At the time of lift-off, the total weight of Mars Orbiter was around 1,337.2 kg (2,948lb). This also included a weight of 852 kg (1,878 lb) of the propellant. Did you know, that this weight is equivalent to the weight of a small SUV like the Mahindra Scorpio? The Scorpio weighs around 1,820 kg (4,012 lb).
Finances Matter: To work on a shoestring budget on the Mars Mission is something impossible! However, this mission is actually known to be the least expensive mission. The total cost of the mission was around ₹ 450 Crore or USD 73 million. The low cost was because of the simple design, reduced work cost and use of home technology. Did you know, that the most sought-after space-based movie Interstellar was completed on a budget of USD 165 million. This is so much more than what was used for MOM!
Women are Also from Mars: Men are from mars and women are from venus, does not hold true when talking in terms of MOM. The success of MOM goes to a group of women at ISRO who wear gajras and colourful sarees. While working on the mission these women were known as The Women from Mars and Rocket Women. Hats off to these ladies who successfully maintained their work-life balance along with the calculations and concepts of an interplanetary mission.
On the Currency: The Mangalyaan is definitely a big achievement for India. No wonder it found a place on the new pink ₹2000 notes after demonetisation of ₹500 and ₹1000 in 2016. Now, this is some tribute to the historic milestone.
Twitter Fame: The Mangalyaan account on Twitter is quite a celebrity with 500K followers. It loves to go on long cruises, photography and science. Does this not remind you of a friend who went abroad for studies? The first-ever tweet from Mangalyaan was a reply to the US Space Agency, NASA’s Curiosity Rover. Curiosity Rover made friends with Mangalyaan when it entered the Mars Orbit. Now, this is friendship which should be termed as out-of-the-world!
