WAYU, Air Filter which Allows to Breathe Fresh Air

India is facing one of its biggest problem which we all notice daily and also ignore to solve it. We are all aware of the fact that 11 out of the 12 most polluted cities of the world is India. Each year 1.2 million people die because of air pollution which causes various diseases like lung cancer, cardiovascular problems and likes. Also, it is a major threat to pregnant women and newborns.

Database classify air pollution in two ways:

  • PM2.5- particles smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter
  • PM10- particles that are 10 microns in diameter

PM2.5 particles are produced from industrial and agricultural emissions, vehicle exhaust residuals and power generators. These stay in the air for a long time which penetrates deeper into the lungs.  It also affects soil and water bodies which can affect their capability to produce food and ability to support life.

PM2.5 under 30 ug/m3 is considered to be “good” and above 90 ug/m3 is considered “poor”. In India, most of the cities have PM around 100 ug/m3.

To combat this problem IIT Bombay and National Environment Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) have developed WAYU, which stands for Wind Augmentation and Air purifying Unit.

So what does Wayu does

Vinayak Padalkar, the brainchild behind WAYU, created it to solve the problem of air pollution in metros and save people, who spend most of their time outdoors, from its ill effects. According to reports, a major contributor to air pollution are vehicles and re-suspended dust containing harmful chemicals like carbon monoxide (30-35%), particulate matter (20-30%) and nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide (35-70%).

The device works in two stages. The first stage comprises a fan which sucks air with pollutants like dust and particulate matter. The pollutants are then separated with three blades of different dimensions. After this, the air is circulated to a chamber. This chamber oxidises the air with the use of activated carbon which is coated by titanium oxide. This process of oxidation is supported by two ultraviolet lights. The clean air is then let out in the atmosphere.

WAYU is capable of purifying the air in an area of 500 square meters. The operating cost of this device is low as it only needs a half unit of electricity to run for 10 hours. The monthly maintenance cost of the device is as low as Rs. 1500/-.

How does WAYU help:

In its experimental study for 10 days, the device brought down the pollution level to considerably low. PM 2.5 levels came down from 100 ug/m3 to 40 ug/m3 which is under safety limits. It also brought down the level of PM 10 from 160 ug/m3 to 50 ug/m3.

Fall in love with the problem and not the solution. We come across a lot of problems on a daily basis which can be thought of and solved. India is facing thousands of problems today and you can be the one who can solve a problem in your respective fields and contribute to make India a better country. If he can, you too can!!!
